Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People using these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
